5 Simple Steps to a Protected Pool

Follow these steps carefully the first time. After that, it becomes second nature.

1
Step One

Locate the Wings & Orient the Shield

Find the two "wings" — the small flexible tabs at each end of the Skimmer Shield. When the wings point away from you, the shield is in the correct position for installation. You'll hear pool professionals call this the "ready position."

💡

Tip: Hold the shield vertically with the wings pointing outward to quickly confirm you have the correct orientation before proceeding.

Step 1 – Orient the Skimmer Shield: wings pointing outward in ready position
2
Step Two

Firmly Grasp the Wings & Bow the Shield

With both hands, firmly grasp a wing in each hand. Pull both wings toward you simultaneously. This action bows the Skimmer Shield into a semi-circle shape.

The shield is designed to flex — don't be afraid to bend it. The flexible material won't crack or break under normal installation pressure.

💡

Tip: Make sure you're bowing the shield toward you, not away. Bowing in the wrong direction makes the next step much harder.

Step 2 – Bow the Skimmer Shield into a semi-circle by grasping the wings
3
Step Three

Slide the Wings Into the Skimmer Opening

While keeping the shield bowed, slide one wing into one side of the skimmer opening first. Then, while holding it in place, guide the other wing into the opposite side of the opening.

The bowed shape of the shield makes it narrow enough to fit inside the skimmer mouth without forcing or jamming.

💡

Tip: Insert one wing slightly deeper than you think you need to — this gives you the clearance needed to maneuver the second wing into place.

Step 3 – Slide the Skimmer Shield wings into the pool skimmer opening
4
Step Four

Gently Release — The Shield Locks in Place

Once both wings are inside the skimmer opening, gently release your grip. The Skimmer Shield will naturally spring back toward its original straight shape — pressing the wings firmly against the sides of the skimmer opening.

This spring tension is what keeps the shield locked in place. It won't fall out during normal pool operation or wind, but will pop right out when you squeeze the wings together for basket cleaning.

💡

Tip: Give it a light tug to confirm it's locked. If it's secure, you're done! If it slides out, press the wings slightly deeper into the grooves and release again.

Step 4 – Release the Skimmer Shield to let it spring and lock into place

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Skimmer Shield fit my vinyl liner or fiberglass pool skimmer?

The Skimmer Shield is designed to fit the majority of standard vinyl liner and fiberglass pool skimmer openings on the market. Its flexible design accommodates a range of opening sizes. If you have an unusually sized skimmer, contact us and we'll help you determine compatibility.

Does the Skimmer Shield restrict water flow?

No. The open design of the Skimmer Shield allows full, unrestricted water flow while blocking solid debris. Your pump will maintain normal suction and circulation.

How do I clean the Skimmer Shield?

Simply squeeze the wings together to remove the shield, shake or rinse off any debris, and reinstall. The whole process takes less than a minute and is much faster than digging debris out of your basket.

Can I leave the Skimmer Shield in year-round?

Yes! The Skimmer Shield is made from UV-resistant materials that can withstand sun, heat, cold, and all-season weather conditions. You can leave it in through winter if you don't winterize your skimmer, or remove it when you close your pool for the season.

Will it stay in place during heavy wind or storms?

Yes. The spring-tension locking mechanism holds the Skimmer Shield firmly in place during normal pool operation and even during storms. It won't blow away or float out of position.
